BAR HARBOR — Griff Fenton, head coach of the Mount Desert Island High School sailing team for seven years, is retiring.

SOUTHWEST HARBOR — “Don’t ever become a cheesy sailor,” joked Fran Charles, Northeast Harbor Fleet manager and sailing master at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge. He was speaking to a crowd of nearly 30 at a free “chalk talk” last weekend at the Mount Desert Island Community Sailing Center (MDICSC). Mr. Charles described scenarios sailors could encounter during a race, and the most effective ways of navigating them.

BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island High School freshman boys’ basketball team finished a 9-10 season after making it to the semifinals in the Eastern Maine Class B Freshman playoffs.

TREMONT — “This is our toy box,” said Margaret Beaulieu of Classic Boat Shop. She opened the door of a storage facility that led to a shining cluster of Pisces 21 sailboats, hauled for winter storage and maintenance.

SOUTHWEST HARBOR — More than 30 hours of basketball (136 games) will be played during the 20th annual Great Harbor House Shootout, scheduled Friday, March 16, through Sunday, March 18.

BAR HARBOR — The third and fourth-grade boys’ MDI Y basketball travel team finished its season knotted at four wins and four losses.

SOUTHWEST HARBOR — “I love to take care of this boat,” said Lorraine Stanley of Great Harbor Boatworks. She tapped happily on the hull of Resolute, a 21-foot gaff-rigged English-style cutter that is undergoing routine winter maintenance at the boat yard this year.

BAR HARBOR — Darrold Dorr and Barry Gutradt are staples of the Mount Desert Island High School sports sidelines. Using all their own equipment and resources, both photographers have dedicated themselves to volunteering in the pursuit of great sports photographs.

BAR HARBOR — Spars crafted by Bar Harbor’s Elk Spar & Boat Shop will tower over Boston Harbor later this year as part of the newly reconstructed Boston Tea Party replica ships built for the Tea Party Museum, which is slated to open in June.

SOUTHWEST HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island Community Sailing Center (MDICSC) is alive on Fridays with the work of a troop of dedicated volunteers readying the fleet for spring.
