BAR HARBOR — Thorfinn, one of only ten Presto 30 sailboats in the world, is turning heads in the waters off Mount Desert Island this season as the 30-foot sailboat with two masts and wishbone booms cruises through as little as 13 inches of water.

SOUTHWEST HARBOR — Battling fickle breezes, 14 Friendship sloops raced through Great Harbor as part of the 20th annual Southwest Harbor Friendship Sloop Rendezvous held last weekend.

BAR HARBOR — “We're a determined bunch,” said Darron Collins, President of College of the Atlantic, vowing to ascend again some of the highest peaks in Acadia National Park, after climbing only 22 peaks in a period of 17-and-a-half hours on June 25 during his “28 peaks in 24 hours,” a fund-raiser for the college. Collins’ efforts were cut short due to an onslaught of inclement weather.

TREMONT — Fifty-seven area lobstermen spent Sunday afternoon competing just off-shore from the Bernard Town Wharf during the second annual Bass Harbor Lobster Boat Races held in conjunction with the fourth annual blessing of the fleet and the rededication of the sea memorial.

TRENTON —Diana de los Santos has been appointed to the newly-created position of operations manager at the SPCA of Hancock County, following the abrupt departure of Tracy Shaw, former executive director, earlier this month.

SOUTHWEST HARBOR — Down East area sailors are dusting off their tenders, readying for the start of the competitive sailing season on Mount Desert Island, with area fleet houses and sailing schools slated to launch their summer programming in coming weeks.

BAR HARBOR — Bar Harbor Boat Tours, formerly Acadian Cruise Lines, has added a 67-foot passenger vessel to its fleet as part of the company’s move to the newly built, private pier at the Atlantic Oceanside Hotel and Conference Center on Eden Street in Bar Harbor.

BAR HARBOR — Self-described adventure athlete, 31-year-old Amanda James, will balance herself on her handmade, wooden paddle board as she traverses 1,200 to 1,500 miles of Maine inland waters as part of a project she calls “100 Maine Lakes.”

NEWPORT — The Mount Desert Island Trojan varsity softball team fell 5-3 in the preliminary round of the Eastern Maine Class B softball playoffs on Wednesday against the Nokomis Warriors.
