Scanty Landings, Low Price Make for Slow Start to Lobstering

Written by  Stephen Rappaport Wednesday, June 03, 2009 at 12:57 pm

JONESPORT — It’s the beginning of June, the lobster catch is poor and the price is worse.

Steve Peabody, manager of the lobster cooperative serving Beals and Jonesport, said he was paying fishermen $3.25 per pound for hardshell lobsters, $1.75 per pound less than at the same time last year. If that wasn’t bad enough, he said, the catch was way down, too.

The story was much the same in Winter Harbor, another town where lobster rules the roost. Like its competitor to the east, the Winter Harbor Lobster Cooperative was paying lobstermen $3.25 per pound, but not for many pounds.

As is often the case, Stonington Lobster Cooperative manager Stephen Robbins III had a slightly different take on things. The boat price at the co-op is $3.25, but unlike farther eastward, the volume of landings this year is higher than it was a year ago.
