Contracted assessing eyed

Written by  Mark Good Friday, June 14, 2013 at 11:24 am

TREMONT — Could the town save money by contracting out with other towns for assessing property taxes?

That’s what selectmen have asked town manager Millard Billings and assessor Carl Young to look into. Billings is set to retire on June 30 and Young is to take over that position.

Southwest Harbor does not have an assessor on staff. The town contracts with RJD Appraisal of Pittsfield for the service at an annual rate of $34,400.

Southwest Harbor town manager Don Lagrange said this week that his town plans to request bids on assessing sometime while budgeting for the next fiscal year, which begins July 1, 2014. He said he welcomes a proposal from Tremont, a move, he said, that could benefit both towns.
