ELLSWORTH — The second “Pay a Dime for Lyme” basketball tournament is set for Saturday, April 6, at the Ellsworth Elementary-Middle School with 24 teams and 150 players of all ages expected to participate.

Organizer Alisa Runnells said that several colleges, including the University of Maine at Fort Kent, Husson University and Maine Maritime Academy, will be represented by teams.

There also will be players from schools in Regional School Unit 24, and a team bearing the name “Order on the Court” will be representing the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department.

The event will get under way at 9 a.m. with games scheduled on both of the school’s basketball courts.

Also planned are a dunk contest for players and a talk by Constance Dickey of MaineLyme, a non-profit organization whose mission is to decrease the prevalence of Lyme Disease and other tick-borne illnesses in Maine.

Volunteers will man food concessions throughout the day, a fund-raising raffle will be held and shirts will be on sale for $10 each.

Admission is just a dime and the registration fee is $10 per player.

Proceeds from the event will go to sponsor young patients Hunter Cote, Sally and Lydia Jordan and Jimmy Carroll as they travel to Connecticut to meet with a pediatric Lyme Disease specialist in their ongoing battle with the disease.
