Assessor quits over questions

BAR HARBOR — Town assessor Marc Perry resigned Tuesday without notice amidst questioning from the town manager over his real estate activities.

Perry had faced increasing questions this week over his dual careers as an assessor and as a real estate agent after his photo appeared in an ad by real estate firm Sotheby’s Legacy Properties in last week’s Mount Desert Islander.

On Monday he defended his two positions, telling the Islander that because he represented properties almost solely off Mount Desert Island, and none in Bar Harbor, he had no professional conflict. He also pointed out that the town had agreed in writing to pay for the upkeep of his license because it was an advantage for an assessor to have access to realtor information.

Perry had, in turn, agreed to maintain only his active accounts and not take on any new real estate work while he was assessor. He said Tuesday that after pressure from town manager Dana Reed and accusations that he was doing real estate work on town time, he had had enough.

Reed informed the town council Tuesday night in a closed door session of Perry’s departure. He told the Islander that it was too early to talk about next steps in filling the position. In the interim, the town’s assistant assessor will staff the office.
