ELLSWORTH — Two Florida residents were arrested late Monday and charged with trafficking in Oxycodone.

Police arrested 26-year-old John Paul Haddad and 45-year-old Kelly Berkwitz-Gutierrez, both of Hollywood, Fla., following a months-long investigation.

The Maine Drug Enforcement Agency (MDEA) reported the criminal investigation began six months ago after it received “multiple reports of suspicious activity involving prescription drugs.”

On Monday, Haddad allegedly sold 84 Oxycodone tablets to an undercover MDEA agent for $3,024. Haddad was arrested by MDEA agents and Ellsworth police.

Officers then went to the Colonial Motor Inn on High Street, where the two were staying. Police reportedly seized 248 Oxycodone tablets, $1,766 in cash and records from the room.

Haddad and Berkwitz-Gutierrez were both taken to Hancock County Jail, where their bail was set at $1,000 each. They are scheduled to make their first court appearances in Hancock County Superior Court on Thursday, May 23.

According to MDEA, the illicit retail price for a 30-milligram Oxycodone tablet in Hancock County is $50. That brings the total value of the Oxycodone seized in this operation to more than $16,000.
