Surry man arrested on cocaine charge

ELLSWORTH — A Surry man was arrested Sunday afternoon and charged with selling cocaine following a months-long investigation by police.

Mark Briggs, 54, was charged with aggravated trafficking in cocaine, a Class A crime.

Police said they began their investigation of Briggs several months ago after hearing reports he was selling cocaine in Hancock County and traveling out of state to resupply.

On Saturday, agents with the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency (MDEA) were able to follow Briggs as he left Maine and picked him back up when he returned on Sunday.

MDEA agents, Ellsworth police officers and Hancock County Sheriff’s deputies stopped Briggs’ 2007 Cadillac around 1 p.m. on Route 1A in Ellsworth, and searched the vehicle.

Agents reportedly found a vacuum-sealed container in the trunk that contained nearly a half-pound of cocaine, valued at $17,000. Agents then executed a search warrant at Briggs’ home on Morgan Bay Road.

There, according to an MDEA press release, agents found an additional 11 grams of cocaine, packaged for retail sale, and $10,000 in cash.

If convicted, Briggs faces a minimum four-year prison term. Police said the reason his charge is aggravated is because of the amount of cocaine allegedly involved.

Briggs’ bail will be set at his initial court appearance, which will likely be today, as he was already on post-conviction bail for OUI.

This case is being prosecuted by the Attorney General’s Office.
