BAR HARBOR — Just two of Hancock County’s 37 municipalities – Mount Desert and Bar Harbor – will pay for more than 25 percent of the county’s budget next fiscal year.

The total budget that the county commissioners approved in January is just under $5.3 million.

Each municipality’s share of that is based on the state’s valuation of its taxable property. Mount Desert, with a valuation of slightly under $2 billion, accounts for 15.1 percent of the county’s total valuation of $13.2 billion. The town’s county tax bill will be $796,168, an increase of about $8,200 over the current year’s tax payment.

Bar Harbor’s property valuation of nearly $1.4 billion is 10.5 percent of the county total. The town will pay $553,853 in county taxes next year, an increase of about $4,700.

Southwest Harbor’s state property valuation of $653 million is just under 5 percent of the county total. The town’s tax bill will be $261,507.

Tremont has a property valuation of $520 million, which is nearly 4 percent of the county total. Its taxpayers will send the county $208,293.

Trenton, with a valuation of nearly $276 million, accounts for just over 2 percent of the county total and will pay $110,410 in county taxes.

Swans Island has 1.26 percent of the county’s total property valuation. Cranberry Isles has 1.52 percent. Frenchboro has .09 percent, the least of any municipality in the county. Its total property valuation is $11.4 million.

Ellsworth, the Hancock County municipality with the largest population, will pay for just under 8 percent of the county budget.
