ELLSWORTH — John Shoppe of Lamoine, 60, suffered a heart attack Friday night while officiating at a game at the Eastern Maine Basketball Tournament in Bangor.
Ellsworth American Sports Editor Hugh Bowden, who has been covering the tournament, said he observed Shoppe talking to courtside officials during the game and then walking unassisted from the court. But he soon received first response treatment from Bangor Fire Department paramedics who were on the scene.
Basketball Commission Secretary Dave Ames later told Bowden that Shoppe had suffered a serious heart attack and had been hospitalized at Eastern Maine Medical Center.
Shoppe had worked in The Ellsworth American’s Circulation Department several years ago. He has officiated at Eastern Maine sports competitions — basketball, soccer, baseball — for 30 years.
Stephen Fay, managing editor of The Ellsworth American since 1996, is a native of Northern California. He writes The American's weekly wine and DVD reviews and covers breaking news.
