HANCOCK — School Union 92 will be having an ice cream social on Friday, May 22, at the Hancock Grammar School.
The event, which will run from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., is for all current and former Union 92 employees and School Committee members.
The event will include a celebration of accomplishments in Union 92 and an acknowledgement that Union 92 is coming to an end as an organization.
Among Union 92’s accomplishments is a project to improve students’ literacy skills that was started in 2006.
Through a Content Literacy Learning Communities grant, professional development days were devoted to learning, practicing, and sharing literacy strategies. The purpose of the project was to improve student skills in comprehending and interpreting text.
Results of the Maine Educational Assessment showed growth in reading over the last three years.
In 2008, 70 percent of students in grades three through eight met or exceeded the standard, an increase of 12% since the initiative began.
