STONINGTON — A vigil was held Sunday in Gloucester for two missing Deer Isle fishermen. The U.S. Coast Guard suspended its search for the men last week.
The Coast Guard had been searching off the coast of Massachusetts for Captain Wallace Gray II, 25, and his crewman, Wayne Young, 50, who never returned from a Dec. 15 scalloping trip.
The Boston Globe reported that the only thing Gray loved more than being out on the water was being with his son, who is 3.
Young was remembered as a “devoted family man,” the Globe reported.
The Gloucester Fishermen’s Wives Association issued a press release about the men Dec. 19.
The association had partnered with the Foxy Lady II to provide day boat scallops to the Cape Ann Fresh Catch Community Supported Fishery program.
“Although the two missing fishermen were not Gloucester residents, they were members of our local fleet and as such it is with heavy hearts that we mourn their loss at sea,” stated Angela Sanfilippo, the association president.
“To the families of Wallace Gray Jr., and Wayne Young, the GFWA sends sincere condolences and pledges its support during this difficult time,” Sanfilippo said. “We are a community all too familiar with the tragedies that can come to those who choose to live their lives on the water. The families must know that they are not alone as they mourn the loss of their loved ones.”
