LAMOINE — After seven seasons at the helm, Griff Fenton retired as coach of the Mount Desert Island High School sailing team after the close of the 2011 season last spring.
This month, at its annual meeting in Providence, R.I., the New England Schools Sailing Association (NESSA) honored Fenton with the Stephen B. Leslie Sportsmanship Award.
The Leslie Award is given annually to the coach of “a team who possesses the pure essence of the sport,” Andrew Nugnes, president of NESSA, and coach of the Barnstable (Mass.) High School sailing team, said in an e-mail.
Usually, NESSA hands out only one award, but 2012 was different, Nugnes said.
“This year, NESSA had a unique situation in which four longtime coaches were hanging up the life jacket, Griff being one of them,” Nugnes said.
