BAR HARBOR — A Jamaican national who caught the attention of police earlier this summer was arrested by Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents (ICE) Sept. 26 and taken out of town for deportation.
Clive Tyrell, 35, was picked up by Officer Dustin Tierney at his workplace, Hinckley’s Cottages, at the request of the ICE agents.
“They interviewed him, determined he was in the country illegally, and took him into custody,” Officer Tierney said. Three ICE agents were in town for the operation, he said.
Mr. Tyrell was on bail from the Hancock County Jail at the time of his arrest, so police were familiar with where he lived and worked, Officer Tierney said.
Mr. Tyrell was arrested by local police earlier this summer at a West Street Extension apartment after a domestic altercation. He was booked at the Hancock County Jail July 28 on charges of domestic violence, criminal threatening and obstructing the report of a crime.
Two days later, on July 30, Mr. Tyrell was arrested during a traffic stop on Route 3 for violating the conditions of his release not to have contact with his wife, who was driving the car.
ICE spokesman Ross Feinstein said Monday that his agency acts either on tips from local law enforcement or by conducting their own inquiry. ICE asks local police not to enforce immigration laws, he said.
