ELLSWORTH — The Bucksport Golden Bucks have climbed to third place in the Maine Principals’ Association Eastern Maine Class B standings, trailing only Waterville and Rockland.

Bucksport improved its record to 6-1 on Tuesday with a 4-0 shutout of the Old Town Coyotes

On the field, the Ellsworth Eagles also have established themselves as one of the better teams in Eastern Maine Class B with a record of 6-2 as the baseball season nears the midway point.

But one would never know it from the MPA’s Heal point standings this week.

The standings, supposedly including games through Saturday, placed the Eagles 16th among 21 teams with only a 3-1 record and did not include Ellsworth’s doubleheader win over previously undefeated Caribou on Saturday.

The hard-luck Mount Desert Island Trojans, ranked 13th, are just 2-5 so far, but four of those five losses have been by either one or two runs.

In Class C, the George Stevens Academy Eagles — after losing their first two games — have reeled off six straight wins and sit atop the Class C standings.

That’s due in part to standout senior righthanded pitcher Peter Dickinson.

In three complete game efforts so far on the mound, Dickinson has gone 2-1, allowing just seven hits and striking out a whopping 38 batters.

Also in Class C, the struggling Sumner Tigers are now 1-6 and are ranked 13th. And in Class D, the 3-2 Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners are ranked sixth.
