Lighthouse Trail Closed for Repairs

Written by  Fenceviewer Staff Thursday, September 13, 2012 at 4:15 pm

ACADIA NATIONAL PARK — The U.S. Coast Guard has started maintenance and repairs to the Bass Harbor Head Light and keeper’s house. The paved access trail to the lighthouse, on the west side of the parking area, will be closed immediately and will reopen by Oct. 6.

This route is maintained and operated by the U.S. Coast Guard and will not be accessible during the construction period. Several parking spaces have been allocated to construction equipment, so parking will be limited.

The National Park Service shoreline access trail on the east side of the parking area will remain open. This trail is steep and comprised of milled lumber stairs and granite steps. Use extreme caution if attempting to approach the lighthouse from this side, and keep a safe distance from the lighthouse while construction is in progress.

The shoreline can be treacherous and challenging to navigate in the vicinity of the lighthouse.
