BAR HARBOR — A ban on alcoholic beverages at Mount Desert Island High School has scotched plans by a Canadian company that organizes cycling tours to bring 1,400 riders to MDI for three days next August.
Velo Quebec Voyages, based in Montreal, is planning a bike tour in Maine and wanted to use the high school building and grounds for housing and feeding the riders.
Chris Fogg, executive director of the Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce, told the high school board Monday night that Velo Quebec would boost the island’s economy by hiring local caterers and other service providers.
“We also expect these cycling enthusiasts will come back in the future and stay in our hotels, eat in our restaurants and shop,” he said. “It’s really a great opportunity for our community to showcase what we have to offer here.”
Dick Broom never seems to walk anywhere without a faithful dog at his side. His beat includes the towns of Mount Desert and Trenton, Mount Desert Island High School and the regional school system board and superintendent's office. He and his wife live in Bar Harbor.
