ORLAND — Campers in the Great Pond Mountain Wildlands can now enjoy a new, Adirondack-style lean-to at the Baker Brook Camping Area near the North Gate of the Wildlands.
Paige Cote of Orland, a Girl Scout and recent graduate of John Bapst High School, organized acquisition of materials and construction of the lean-to.
She worked with a team of volunteers to assemble it off-site and then reconstruct it in the Wildlands earlier this summer.
Once her paperwork for the project is complete, Cote will be awarded her Girl Scout Gold Award, which is the equivalent of becoming an Eagle Scout in Boy Scouts.
This fall, Cote plans to attend the Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering in Needham, Mass.
More than a dozen volunteers worked on the project, and materials were donated by Katahdin Cedar Log Homes and EBS Building Supply.
The new lean-to sleeps four campers comfortably with room for two more in a pinch. The Baker Brook Campsite also has room for up to three tents, plus a fire pit and a box toilet.
To see the Great Pond Mountain Conservation Trust camping policy and make a required reservation, visit the trust’s website at www.greatpondtrust.org or call 469-7190.
A small donation is requested for camping. A second Wildlands campsite, the Mitchville Campground on Hothole Brook, also is open to the public.
