Running Celebration Set

MOUNT DESERT — Running enthusiasts are lacing up their shoes for the sixth annual track festival held by Eden Athletics. The event is scheduled to be held at the Mount Desert Island High School track on Aug. 8 at 5:30 p.m.

Participants will be put through their paces in six events. These would include three one-mile races: one for high school students, one for past and present members of the First Strides introductory running course members, or those who wish to join the course. There will be another one-mile race for any other participants.

There is also a 4x400 meter relay event, a 400-meter race for children 12 years old and younger, and a two-mile race, which would be one of the 12 Jack Russell's Steakhouse Point Series races held by Eden Athletics for its members.

“It has been a lot of fun in the past,” said event organizer Frank Hague. “The kids seem to enjoy it, and for other people, it is a chance to test what kind of shape they are in. Every once in a while we get a college runner.”

Anyone wishing to participate can register before or at the event. Those wishing to register in advance can find a release form and instructions at www.edenathletics.com. There is a $5 fee for all participants, except children who only compete in the 400-meter event.

Eden Athletics is a local running club, comprised of year-round and summer MDI residents, that has been organizing running events for more than six years. The club offers introductory courses for running and walking for individuals of all ages and fitness levels.

The Eden Track Festival is sponsored by Jack Russell’s Steakhouse, The First bank, Cadillac Mountain Sports, Hannaford, and Mount Desert Spring Water.
