ELLSWORTH — With wins over Bucksport and Coastal of the Blue Hill-Deer Isle area, Ellsworth’s Little League All-stars have played their way into the state tournament for ages 10-11.

Ellsworth won the District 1 championship on Saturday at Demeyer Field, cruising to an 18-7 elimination win over Coastal.

The Ellsworth all-stars jumped out to a five-run lead in the first inning and never trailed, scoring at least a run in each of the next four innings in a game that was shortened to five innings under the 12-run mercy rule.

Isaac Wardwell had a big game at the plate for Ellsworth, driving in six runs with a double and a triple.

Also for Ellsworth, Tyler Mitchell went four-for-four at the plate, scoring three runs; Riley Grindle singled twice and scored three runs; and Matt Burnett and Garrett Smith each singled and scored two runs.

Ellsworth pitchers Matt Perconti, Christian Bosse and Conner Wagstaff combined for six strikeouts.

Ben Parker tripled and singled, scoring two runs, Devin Grindle doubled and singled and Caden Mattson had a pair of singles for Coastal.

Grindle, Gavin Mote, Logan Lord and Parker combined for nine strikeouts on the mound for Coastal.

In its tournament opener, Ellsworth rallied from a 3-2 deficit to down Bucksport 8-3 in Bucksport on July 14.

Ellsworth jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, then scored four runs in the top of the fourth after Bucksport had taken a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third.

Wardwell, Bosse and Javon Williams each had a pair of singles and scored two runs each for Ellsworth.

Dylan Wight singled and scored a run and Jacob Ames drove in a run for Bucksport.

Wagstaff and Perconti combined on a six-inning one-hitter for Ellsworth.

Wagstaff started on the mound and struck out eight batters in three and one-third innings, and Perconti had six strikeouts in two and two-thirds innings.

For Bucksport, pitchers Luke Wardwell and Ames combined for nine strikeouts.

In the upcoming state tournament in Waldoboro, Ellsworth will play on Sunday at 5 p.m. and again Monday at 5 p.m. in pool play.

With at least one win, Ellsworth would advance into the championship round.
