BLUE HILL — Bonnie Miller Smith, 84, died peacefully July 4, 2012, at Blue Hill Memorial Hospital, with her family at her side.
Bonnie received a BA degree from the University of Michigan and spent much of her career as an executive at Michigan Bell and AT&T. Upon retirement, she and her late husband, Joseph Smith, moved from Michigan to Hilton Head, S.C., in 1990. In August 2010, Bonnie moved from Hilton Head to Blue Hill to be closer to her family. Education, politics and bridge were just a few of Bonnie’s passions. While living in Hilton Head, she established the Bonnie Miller Smith Scholarship Fund to provide promising students with assistance toward the cost of college or other vocational training. She maintained the scholarship fund, directed toward residents of the Blue Hill Peninsula, after moving to Maine. She served on the Beaufort County Board of Education in South Carolina for five years and then helped to recruit and prepare board candidates. Bonnie not only loved to talk politics, she frequently met with local and state representatives to discuss needs in the community. Shortly after moving to Blue Hill, she started a bridge group at Parker Ridge Retirement Community and recently spearheaded a grounds committee.
Bonnie is survived by her son, Scott Miller of Blue Hill; his wife, Ruth; and their two sons, David and Christopher; a niece; a nephew; two grandnieces; a grandnephew; and four stepchildren.
A private remembrance will be held in Hilton Head, S.C., in the fall. Memorial gifts may be sent to the Oncology Department at Blue Hill Memorial Hospital, 57 Water St., Blue Hill, ME 04614.
