Deadline Near for Comments on Wording Of State’s Same-sex Marriage Referendum

Written by  Fenceviewer Staff Tuesday, July 10, 2012 at 12:22 pm

ELLSWORTH — July 16 at 5 p.m. is the deadline for submitting comments regarding the wording of the referendum on same-sex marriage in November.

At issue is the wording Secretary of State Charles E. Summers has proposed: “Do you want to allow same-sex couples to marry?”

The title approved by the secretary of state last year was: “An Act to Allow Marriage Licenses for Same-sex Couples and Protect Religious Freedom.” More than 105,000 residents of Maine signed the petition with that language.

The referendum would allow marriage licenses for same-sex couples and protect religious freedom for clergy and religious institutions not to perform same-sex marriages. Mainers United for Marriage proposed the revised language: “Do you favor a law allowing marriage licenses for same-sex couples that protects religious freedom by ensuring no religion or clergy be required to perform such a marriage in violation of their religious beliefs?”

Comments can be sent to the secretary of state by e-mail ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) or phone (626-8400).
