Hodgson, Shorey Compete In U.S. Olympic Trials

Written by  Hugh Bowden Tuesday, July 03, 2012 at 2:00 pm

ELLSWORTH — Two athletes with Hancock County ties stepped onto the national stage last week as they competed in the U.S. Olympic Trials.

In the swimming team trials in Omaha, Neb., Dakota Hodgson, whose family still maintains a summer home in Franklin, reached the finals of the men’s 200-meter butterfly, finishing sixth in a race that was won by Olympic champion Michael Phelps.

Hodgson improved his time in each of his three races.

He placed fifth in his first round with a time of 1 minute and 58.51 seconds on Wednesday.

In the semifinal race, Hodgson finished in 1:58.45, and in Friday’s final, he clocked 1:58.07.

Phelps qualified for Olympic competition with a winning time of 1:53.65.

In the racewalking competition in Eugene, Ore., Ben Shorey, an Ellsworth High School graduate and former state champion, placed seventh in the 20-kilometer racewalk with a time of 1:34:45.

Earlier this year, Shorey finished third in the Olympic Trials for the 50-kilometer racewalk.

Shorey, who was a national champion race walker for the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, now resides in Kenosha, Wis.
