ELLSWORTH — Maine Coast Memorial Hospital Infection Preventionist Barbara MacPike was awarded the 2012 Exemplary Infection Prevention & Control Professional Award last week at the Maine Hospital Association Summer Forum.
As the infection preventionist at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital, MacPike has put together a hand hygiene campaign and served as the hand hygiene chairman at the Maine Infection Prevention Coalition for the past two years.
The Hand Hygiene Subcommittee put into place a process so that all hospitals in Maine do their hand hygiene observation the exact same way and educate their observers in the exact same way.
MacPike was selected by the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) to present this project at the APIC national conference in San Antonio, Texas, earlier this month.
Hand-washing is the number one way to prevent hospital acquired infections. Under MacPike’s leadership, Maine Coast Memorial Hospital has a 93.2 percent compliance rate.
