Written by  Fenceviewer Staff Monday, June 25, 2012 at 1:50 pm

ELLSWORTH — Larry Stettner, master croquet guru of Southwest Harbor, dethroned three-time champion Neil Houghton of Northeast Harbor to win the fifth annual Maine/New Hampshire Croquet Championship on Sunday at Woodlawn.

The tournament, which saw play at Woodlawn and at the Tapley Cove home of Marcia Chapman and Mary Cheney Gould in Brooksville during its four-day run, drew 21 players competing for bragging rights in the two-state region.

Stettner downed Houghton in the championship flight, with Perry Mattson of Surry in third place.

In the first flight, Randall McAndrews of Mount Desert bested John Dainton, with Lloyd Hatton placing third.

Charles Alexander of Ellsworth defeated Kathleen Dainton for the second flight title, with Diane Saunders finishing third.

George Blagden of Blue Hill bested Tim McCormick for the third flight title, with Don Whalen placing third.

The next U.S. Croquet Association sanctioned event at Woodlawn will be the Mini-Lobster Six-Wicket Tournament Sept. 19-23.

Meanwhile, the public is invited to play golf croquet every Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. with a social hour following play. Nonmembers of Woodlawn are asked to contribute $5 toward court maintenance costs.

The next free croquet lesson will be offered Saturday, June 30, from 10 a.m. to noon.

To sign up, call Woodlawn at 667-8671.
