ACADIA NAT’L PARK — Loons are nesting on four of the seven large ponds on Mount Desert Island. Those chicks are expected to hatch around July 4, said resource management specialist Bruce Connery.
The first nesting attempt of the loons at Upper Hadlock Pond failed; to protect the second effort, the park has closed the Upper Hadlock Brook trail from Route 198 to the trail’s intersection with the carriage road.
Last year, all of the nesting efforts of loons failed.
The peregrine chicks at Beech Cliff fledged over the weekend. Mr. Connery said the nesting efforts of the peregrines at the Precipice and Valley Cove failed. The trails at those sites are still closed because the park must replace a ladder and rungs and remove fallen trees.
