ACADIA NAT’L PARK — A 70-year-old New Hampshire woman was hurt when she fell on oceanside rocks near the Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse last Friday.
Roberta Beeson said she was descending to a favorite remote cobble beach when she fell approximately 8 feet onto sharp rocks. She managed to call for help on her cell phone although her location could not be pinpointed automatically because of the type of phone she was using.
The beach is about a mile east of the light between the head and Ship Harbor.
According to Ranger Ed Pontbriand, park rescuers eventually found Ms. Beeson, in part, thanks to her use of a rescue whistle she always carries in her pack, and, with help from emergency responders from the Southwest Harbor/Tremont ambulance service, gave Ms. Beeson first aid. Crews placed her on a stretcher and transferred her to the Tremont harbormaster’s boat and then to a larger lobster boat for the trip to a nearby dock. She was then taken by ambulance to the Mount Desert Island Hospital in Bar Harbor.
Ms. Beeson said she suffered cuts and bruises but no broken bones. She was released from the hospital later that evening and was able to drive home to New Hampshire on her own. A letter from her praising area EMS personnel and others involved in the rescue appears on this week’s editorial page.
Islander editor Earl Brechlin first discovered Mount Desert Island 35 years ago – and never left. The author of seven guide and casual history books, he is a Registered Maine Guide and has served as president of the Maine and New England Press Associations. He and his wife live in Bar Harbor.
