RSU 24 Withdrawal Petitioners Talk Shop

Written by  Cyndi Wood Thursday, June 21, 2012 at 3:18 pm

ELLSWORTH — Members of the withdrawal petition committees from Ellsworth, Hancock and Lamoine met Tuesday to “keep the ball rolling” on the school consolidation withdrawal process.

Voters in each of the communities on June 12 authorized starting the process of withdrawing from Regional School Unit 24 (RSU 24).

Each municipality must now negotiate its own withdrawal agreement with the RSU. The agreements must address 11 points, including how the municipalities will provide educational services, transportation and administration and how they will divide school assets and honor outstanding bonds and contractual obligations.

The groups to negotiate those contracts will be appointed by elected officials in each community after they are directed to do so by the state.

The withdrawal supporters who met Tuesday night said they wanted to begin discussions before those groups were formed due to the tight timeline for the withdrawal process.

After the committees are formed, they will have 90 days to negotiate withdrawal documents with the RSU. The Department of Education will have up to 60 days to review the plans.

Organizers hope to have the withdrawal agreements on the November ballot.
