TRENTON – A traffic accident involving an Island Explorer propane powered bus halted all traffic onto and off Mount Desert Island on Route 3 for several hours Wednesday evening.
Traffic on the Bar Harbor side was backed up to Seabury Drive, several miles from the Trenton Bridge.
Witnesses said the bus was involved in a collision with another vehicle that caused the propane tank on the bus to rupture. No fire was reported but crews, worried about the possibility of fire or an explosion, halted all traffic past the accident site that is between the Trenton Bridge and Route 230. Firefighters were spraying the leaking tank down with water. The crash occurred shortly just after 4:30 p.m.
Motorists reported on the Mount Desert Islander’s Facebook page that they had been stuck in traffic for more than two hours.
No major injuries were reported.
