BUCKSPORT — Bucksport High School officials have announced the names of the students who have been selected to attend the Dirigo Boys State and Dirigo Girls State programs.
The programs, sponsored by the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary, respectively, are designed to teach students how government works while developing leadership skills and an appreciation for the rights citizens enjoy, according to a website for the two programs.
The programs are open to rising seniors. Boys State and Girls State programs are held annually across the country.
Dirigo Boys State will be held at Thomas College from June 17-21, while Dirigo Girls State will be held at Husson University from June 17-22.
This year marks the 65th anniversary of both of Maine’s programs, which started in 1947.
Delegates to Dirigo Boys State are Alexander Bourgon, Mitchell Burgess, David Fucillo, Cody Gray, Brady MacLeod, Andrew Marsh and Joseph McNamara.
Delegates to Dirigo Girls State are Chloe Carmichael, Courtney Fish, Kacie Hurd, Katharine Jones and Madison Porter.
The following organizations each sponsored one or more students: American Legion Women’s Auxiliary No. 93, Bucks Mills Rod and Gun Club, Bucksport High School, Bucksport True Value Hardware, Dead River Co. Transportation Division, Rosen’s Department Store, Verona Grange No. 206 and Wardwell Contracting (division of Lane Construction Corp.).
