DANFORTH — Sydney Ouzts was at her best on Saturday as the Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners upset the top-seeded East Grand Vikings 1-0 on Saturday.
The Mariners scored the only run of the game in the top of the sixth inning.
With two outs, Ouzts had a slap-hit single and Katie Haskell was inserted as a pinch runner.
Haskell stole second and Chelsea Brown then hit a slow roller to the shortstop.
“Katie was off with the pitch and was past the shortstop; by the time the ball got there,” said Siebert. “They were focused on the play at first, so when Katie hit third I just kept her going.”
Brown beat the throw to first base, said Siebert, “and Katie was six or seven feet from home plate before they realized she was coming in.”
In what was a classic pitchers’ duel, East Grand’s Kaitlyn Beaudoin allowed just three hits in her complete game effort, striking out eight batters.
“She was the best pitcher we’ve seen all year,” said Siebert. “But Sydney was on her game, focused and determined.”
Ouzts had the edge, allowing just one hit — in the seventh inning — and striking out 13 batters while walking nobody.
