GSA Girls Top Van Buren To Win EM Tennis Title

Written by  Hugh Bowden Friday, June 08, 2012 at 3:06 pm

BANGOR — The Van Buren Crusader girls went into Thursday’s Eastern Maine Class C Tennis Championship as the top seed.

But it was the third-seeded George Stevens Academy Eagles who prevailed, sweeping the Crusaders 5-0 to win their fourth regional title in six years.

The season was the best ever for the Crusaders, who went undefeated until Thursday’s title game.

But in congratulating the Eagles after the match, Van Buren coach Leah Levasseur said GSA was easily the toughest opponent the Crusaders faced this year.

Senior Maddie Theoharidis got things started for GSA as she rolled over Natasha Bourgoin 6-1, 6-0 at third singles.

Sophomore Maggie Keating and junior Ye Zhang followed with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Chantal Rioux and Felisha Bouchard at second doubles.

Sophomore Charlotte Reiter clinched the win for the Eagles at second singles, downing Parise Rossignol 6-1, 6-3.

The wins kept coming as the senior duo of Ramsay Williamson and Grace Bugbee battled their way to a 6-4, 7-5 win over Courtney Parent and Chantal Deveau at first doubles.

Senior Sotherd Steer completed the sweep for the Eagles, downing Haley Lizoitte 6-4, 6-0 at first singles.

GSA was scheduled to face the Waynflete Flyers on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Colby College in Waterville for the state  Class C title.
