WATERVILLE — The Ellsworth Eagles are still undefeated as they head into Saturday’s State Class B tennis championship match against the defending champion Falmouth Yachtsmen.
Last year, the Yachtsmen dispatched Ellsworth 5-0 in little more than an hour, and the Eagles — especially seniors Tyler Small, Brandan Albee and Dillon Toothaker — are hoping for a different outcome this year.
That four-year trio of seniors helped the 15-0 Eagles capture their third Eastern Maine championship in four years on Wednesday at Colby College with a 4-1 win over the second-seeded Mount Desert Island Trojans.
The Eagles had twice beaten the Trojans 5-0 during the regular season and, for the most part, Wednesday’s match followed that pattern.
At first singles, Small rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Luke Horton.
Senior Tyler Beardsley downed Ian Sampson 6-2, 6-4 at third singles.
It was the second straight match in which Beardsley rallied from a 4-1 second set deficit to win.
“It’s funny,” he said Wednesday. “As soon as I was down 4-1, I just felt like I was going to win it.”
Albee and Dustin Murphy, yet another senior, cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Andrew Dalton and Woofie Kaiser at first doubles.
And at second doubles, Alec and Evan Toothaker held off a the stubborn MDI duo of Caleb Cough and Kyle Greaves to win 6-4, 6-3.
But MDI senior Garrett Lee saved his best for last in the second singles match against Dillon Toothaker.
After Toothaker cruised to a 6-0 first set win, Lee picked up his game and went on to win the next two sets 6-4, 6-4 to salvage a victory for the Trojans, who finished the season with a record of 9-6.
