DOVER-FOXCROFT — The season came to an end for the Ellsworth Eagles in an eight-inning 4-3 loss to the Foxcroft Academy Ponies.
The 13th-ranked Eagles saw a 3-0 lead disappear as the fourth-seeded Ponies rallied for a run in the fourth inning, two in the fifth and the game-winner in the bottom of the eighth.
Ellsworth’s runs came in the third inning when Kyle Haslam and Riley DeWitt each singled and Brandon Braley reached on an error to load the bases.
Dustin Smelley then drilled a bases-clearing double to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead.
But in the fourth inning, Cody Coiley doubled and scored on a single by Luke Olson.
Haslam, who pitched a complete game for Ellsworth, issued a pair of walks to Caleb Richard and Hunter Law in the fifth, and both runners scored on a single by Forrest Law to knot the score at 3-3.
In the bottom of the eighth, Coiley doubled and raced home with the winning run on a single by Law.
Haslam allowed five hits and struck out six for Ellsworth.
“He pitched a great game,” said coach Mike Boles. “We just couldn’t come up with the timely hit. We loaded the bases in the first inning and couldn’t score.”
The Eagles finished with a 6-11 record.
