Ellsworth’s Looker, MDI Foursome Win Class B Titles

BAR HARBOR — Aleta Looker of the Ellsworth Eagles and the Mount Desert Island foursome of Olivia and Isabel Erickson, Maggie Painter and Malia Demers turned in winning performances at Saturday’s State Class B Outdoor Track Championships at MDI High School.

Looker, a sophomore, won the 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes and 19.69 seconds, less than two seconds off the state record time of 2:17.89 set in 2001.

Looker also was runner-up with a time of 5:08.45 in the 1,600-meter run. She finished behind  behind junior Bethanie Brown of Waterville, who set a state Class B record of 4:55.23 in the event.

The MDI foursome of the Ericksons and Painter, all sophomores, and Demers, a junior, was less than five seconds of the state mark in winning the four-by-800-meter relay in 9:44.36.

Waterville took top team honors with 145 points, followed by Greely with 85 and Lake Region with 45. Ellsworth was ninth with 27 points and MDI was 10th with 26.

Several other Ellsworth and MDI girls turned in strong performances.

For the Eagles, junior Tori Huntley was runner-up in the javelin competition with a throw of 106 feet, and senior Lauren Barkhouse was seventh in the pole vault, clearing a height of 8 feet.

For the Trojans:

Isabel Erickson was third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:23.93.

Painter was third in the 3,200-meter run in 11:35.65 and Nora Hubbell was sixth in 11:44.98.

Bailey Burr was sixth in the triple jump with a distance of 32 feet, 7.25 inches.

In the boys’ championship meet, Ellsworth sophomore Dan Curts came up just short in his bid to win the 3,200-meter run. Curts  finished in 9:26.59, just 23-hundredths of a second behind winner Silas Eastman of Fryeburg, who clocked 9:26.36.

Falmouth and York tied for the team championship with 93 points each, followed by Waterville with 84 and Medomak Valley with 50. MDI and Ellsworth were tied for 10th place with 15 points each.

Also scoring for Ellsworth:

The foursome of senior Blake Pattengale, junior Kody Holmes and sophomores Robert Looker and Curts placed fourth in the four-by-800-meter relay in 8:39.59.

Sophomore Dan Cox was fifth in the discus with a throw of 121 feet, 10 inches.

Scoring for the Trojans:

Senior Jayson Burke was third in the shot put with a throw of 47 feet, 7.75 inches.

Senior Richard Helmke was fifth in the 800-meter run in 2:02.27.

Junior Tom Reilly was seventh in the pole vault, clearing a height of 11 feet.

The foursome of junior Chris Clemens, sophomore Will Richard, freshman Brandon Murphy and Helmke placed fifth in the four-by-400-meter relay in 3:38.27.

The foursome of Murphy, Reilly, Clemens and Helmke placed sixth in the four-by-100-meter relay in 46.69 seconds.
