ELLSWORTH — Brian Higgins has received plenty of accolades as the winningest high school soccer coach in Maine history.
But since 1983, Higgins has also been compiling an impressive array of wins as the only coach the Ellsworth High School tennis teams ever have had.
Based on an unofficial perusal of records, at the end of this year’s regular season, Higgins’ teams were just two wins away from a combined 600 victories — the boys with a record of 291-106 and the girls with a record of 307-79.
Higgins got the 600th win on Friday when the Eagle girls downed the Hermon Hawks 3-2 in an Eastern Maine Class B quarterfinal.
The coach was honored at a brief ceremony that included presentation of a commemorative plaque and a giant tennis ball signed by members of this year’s girls’ and boys’ teams.
Those 600 wins include six Eastern Maine Class B championships (1988, 1996, 2001, 2002, 2009 and 2011) and a state Class B title in 1996 for the boys, and seven Eastern Maine titles (1986, 1994, 1997-2000 and 2002) for the girls.
Over the 29 years of the program, the Eagle girls never have had a losing season and the boys have had only four.
Hugh Bowden, executive editor of The Ellsworth American, is almost a Maine native. He writes editorials, covers Hancock County sports and helps out where needed in the editorial department.
