Whooping Cough Cases on the Rise

Written by  Fenceviewer Staff Wednesday, June 06, 2012 at 1:35 pm

BLUE HILL — Maine is on track this year to surpass last year’s number of whooping cough cases, three of which are in Blue Hill.

School officials have reported three cases of whooping cough — two at the Blue Hill Consolidated School and one at George Stevens Academy.

The Maine Centers for Disease Control (CDC) announced May 15 that for the first five months of this year, 55 cases of pertussis, or whooping cough, had been reported. This far exceeds the total of 53 cases reported for all of in 2010.

The CDC stated in a news release that pertussis is a “highly communicable vaccine-preventable disease that can last for many weeks.”

Pertussis can cause serious illness and can be life-threatening, especially in infants, the CDC reported.

Treatment includes antibiotics. Victims need to stay home from school and work and other social activities until five days of treatment have been completed.
