Lady Eagles Hold Off Trojans

Written by  Hugh Bowden Thursday, May 31, 2012 at 12:54 pm

ELLSWORTH — The Ellsworth Eagles jumped in front early and then withstood a seventh-inning comeback bid by the Trojans to close out the regular season with a 7-6 win on Wednesday.

The Trojans struck first as Shelby O’Neil slammed a leadoff triple and scored on an Ellsworth throwing error for a 1-0 lead.

But the Eagles jumped in front 2-1 in the second inning.

Nicole Austin drew a leadoff walk from MDI righthander Hannah Shaw and went to second on a sacrifice by Sam McGuire and to third on a wild pitch.

After a walk to Phyllicia Jordan, Marissa Boynton was thrown out at first on a bunt and Austin beat the ensuing throw to the plate. In the collision between Austin and MDI catcher Sierra Myrick, the ball got away and Jordan scored the go-ahead run from second base.

Ellsworth added three more runs in the bottom of the third.

Heather Holt led off with a double and scored on a one-out single by Cristin Wright, with Wright going to second on the late throw to the plate.

Emily Berry then singled, driving in Wright, and Berry scored on a single by McGuire, who went to second when the ball was bobbled in right field.

The Trojans picked up two runs in the fourth as Shaw singled, Molly Carroll walked and Alyssa Young was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Shaw was forced out at home on a bouncer back to Ellsworth pitcher Megan Hunt, but Carroll scored when Abby Jewett was hit by a pitch.

Young scored the second run on a single by Bridget Parady.

Ellsworth pushed the lead to 7-3 in the bottom of the inning on singles by Marissa Boynton and Annika Firestone, a run-scoring bunt by Holt and an RBI single by Wright.

In the top of the fifth, Shaw had a bunt single, stole second and scored when Molly Carroll’s outfield fly was dropped.

One out later, Danika Kanu singled to put runners at first and third and Carroll scored on a passed ball, cutting the Ellsworth lead to 7-5.

MDI made things interesting in the top of the seventh.

Shaw drilled a triple to right and scored on a double by Carroll.

Young then grounded to first, moving Carroll to third, but she was stranded there as Ellsworth’s Phyllicia Jordan made a game-ending diving catch of a pop fly to left field.
