TREMONT — After selectmen voted 4-0 last week to accept the resignation of selectman Hugh Gilley, town manager Millard Billings said Wednesday that the remaining board members will reconsider that decision at their next meeting.
Mr. Gilley was elected to a three-year term in May 2011. He did not submit a resignation letter nor did he give any reason for stepping down. Town officials assume the resignation was because he is taking a class that prevents him from attending a majority of meetings.
According to Mr. Billings, Mr. Gilley has attended only three of the twice-monthly meetings since January. His absences have been excused.
Selectmen at the May 21 meeting discussed filling the vacant seat in a special election. Due to notification requirements regarding nomination papers, that election could not be held until mid-August, Mr. Billings said.
“My recommendation was to continue as they have been doing,” he said. The budget process has been completed for the upcoming fiscal year and selectmen traditionally have only one meeting a month in the summer, Mr. Billings continued. By then, he added, Mr. Gilley might be done with his class.
Selectmen are scheduled to meet again on Monday, June 4.
