Four County Teams Headed for Tourney

Written by  Hugh Bowden Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at 4:09 pm

ELLSWORTH — First the good news.

The Ellsworth Eagles and Mount Desert Island Trojans in Class B, the Bucksport Golden Bucks in Class C and the Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners in Class D all appear headed for post-season play.

The bad news is that, except for the top-ranked and undefeated Golden Bucks, the teams are in the lower half of their brackets and likely will be playing their games on the road when playoffs begin next Tuesday.

The Bucks will draw a first-round bye in Class C and likely will play their quarterfinal at home on Thursday, June 7.

In Class B, 10-5 Ellsworth currently is ranked eighth and 10-5 MDI is 10th.

The Mariners, undefeated at 15-0, are one of five Class D teams getting first round byes. But when it comes to the June 7 quarterfinal round, the Mariners — who will finish no higher than fifth — likely will have to travel to Aroostook County to face the fourth-ranked team.

In regular season wrap-ups today, the Ellsworth Eagles are slated to host the MDI Trojans, the George Stevens Academy Eagles are to face the Mariners in Blue Hill and the Golden Bucks are to play host to the Sumner Tigers.

Neither GSA nor Sumner will qualify for post-season play.
