EHS Wins PVC Doubles Titles

CARIBOU — Doubles duos for the Ellsworth Eagles took top boys’ and girls’ honors in Saturday’s Penobscot Valley Conference Tennis Doubles Championships at Caribou High School.

Jessica Toothaker and Rachel Ball notched four wins, ending with a 6-2, 6-3 victory of Madeline Brown and Caroline Cook of the Mount Desert Island Trojans in the championship final.

Brandan Albee and Dustin Murphy capped a three-win day with a close 8-6 win over Andrew Dalton and Caleb Cough of MDI in the boys’ final.

In earlier girls’ action:

Toothaker and Ball bested Amelia Guimond and Sam Dubay of Fort Kent 8-0 in the first round and MDI’s Dylan Stillman and Allie Stanley 8-0 in the second round.

The going got a lot tougher in the semifinals as Toothaker and Ball eked out a 9-7 win over Alexa Massey and Erin Patton of Caribou.

Brown and Cook opened with an 8-0 first round win over Paige Bacon and Caroline Reynolds of Hermon.

Their toughest match of the day came in the second round as they prevailed over Sara Gilson and Hilary Boucher of Presque Isle 8-6 before dispatching Brittany and Nicole Overlook of Hermon 8-2 in the semifinals.

In other girls’ action:

Ellsworth’s Olivia Mora and Sarah Shelton downed Jenna Hallett and Chelsea Carroll of Presque Isle 8-5 in the first round, but fell to Presque Isle’s Massey and Patton 8-3 in the second round.

MDI’s Stillman and Stanley bested Clara Collins and Emma Duplissie-Cyr of Caribou 8-5 in the first round.

In boys’ play, Albee and Murphy entered the competition in the second round, downing Mike Dunning and Kwins Yang of John Bapst 8-2.

They defeated Ellsworth teammates Evan and Alec Toothaker 8-6 in the semifinals.

MDI’s Dalton and Cough also started in the second round, downing Chris Danbay-Kelly and Brandon Dyer of Hermon 8-2 and then besting Trevor Gomes and Tyler Kelly of Hermon 8-2 in their semifinal.

In other boys’ action:

Ellsworth’s Toothaker duo defeated Zach Gorence and Dustin Coty of Caribou 8-2 in the first round and Quest Teichman and Josiah Simko of John Bapst 8-1 in the second round.

Woofie Kaiser and Kyle Greaves of MDI downed Drew Barrett and Chris Carroll of Presque Isle 8-2 in the first round but fell to Hermon’s Gomes and Kelly 9-7 in the second round.
