WATERVILLE — Three Hancock County players — Tyler Small of the Ellsworth Eagles, Johnny Xue of the George Stevens Academy Eagles and Mea Clark of the Mount Desert Island Trojans — were eliminated in the Round of 16 at last weekend’s State High School Tennis Championships at Colby College.
On the boys’ side, the sixth-seeded Small defeated Joshua Behrens of Kennebunk 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 in the Round of 32, but was upset by 11th-seeded Sam Leeman of Morse 6-1, 6-7 (7-4), 6-2 in the Round of 16.
Xue of GSA bested Josh Turbide of Dirigo 6-3, 6-3 in the Round of 32 but fell to fourth-seeded Tyler Adams of Bonny Eagle 6-0, 6-0 in the Round of 16.
On the girls’ side, Clark, who was seeded fourth, defeated Paige LeBlond of Lewiston 6-2, 6-1 in the Round of 32 but was upset by 12th-seeded Emma Blakeley of Camden Hills 6-2, 6-2 in the Round of 16.
In other boys’ action:
Behrens of Kennebunk downed Jasper Adam of the George Stevens Academy Eagles 6-1, 6-4 in the Round of 48.
In girls’ action:
Sotherd Steer of the GSA Eagles lost in a pair of tiebreaks 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-5) to Ashley Richards of Caribou in the Round of 32.
Ina Maloney of Ellsworth defeated Caty Galligan of Cheverus 6-3, 6-4 in the Round of 48 but fell to eighth-seeded Colleen O’Donnell of Waterville 6-1, 6-1 in the Round of 32.
Julia Christie of the MDI Trojans bested Roxy Pelletier of Fort Kent 6-1, 6-2 in the Round of 48, but fell to third-seeded Analise Kump of Falmouth 6-0, 6-0 in the Round of 32.
Esther Adams of the Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners lost 6-1, 6-0 to Sarah Hill of Mount Ararat in the Round of 48.
Maddie Theoharidis of the GSA Eagles lost 6-1, 6-2 to Aimee Keushguerian of Lincoln Academy in the Round of 48.
Mia Musetti of MDI fell to Olivia Lopes of Waterville 6-1, 6-0 in the Round of 48.
