ELLSWORTH — The Katahdin Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America exceeded its fund-raising goal at the group’s Golden Eagle Dinner May 17.

The event held at the Ramada raised $16,950 for the Scouts. The goal for the evening was $14,000.

Orland Boy Scouts and twin brothers Alex and Erik Taylor-Lash entertained the crowd with a skit about the opportunities Scouting offers boys — from summer camp to survival skills. They also detailed the good work Scouts have done in the community, including collecting thousands of pounds of food in a national drive.

The special guest for the evening was Golden Eagle Dinner Honoree Sen. Brian Langley (R-Hancock County).

Scout officials said Langley was selected because of his dedication and commitment to the community.

Langley, who grew up in Vermont, joined the Scouts in 1967.

His son, David, achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.

“There has been no greater honor for me than receiving my Eagle Scout dad pin,” Langley told the audience.

He said Scouting offers boys wonderful opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors, develop new skills and become more independent.

“It is because of Scouting that I became a good dad,” he said.

This was the first Downeast Golden Eagle Dinner. Organizers hope to make it an annual event.
