MOUNT DESERT — A panel of consultants will be working fast when they visit here June 3 and 4 to provide community leaders with a roadmap for the town’s economic rejuvenation.
They’ll start with a working dinner on Sunday, where they will discuss challenges and goals with members of the town’s revitalization committee.
On Monday morning, following a walking tour of Main Street and the marina in Northeast Harbor, they will interview several business owners, builders, professionals and other community members. Then, in the afternoon, they will review what they’ve learned and prepare their recommendations, which they will present at the board of selectmen’s meeting that evening.
The 12 consultants – most of them specialists in economic development or land use planning – are working professionals who serve on “technical assistance panels” assembled by the Urban Land Institute (ULI), a nonprofit organization that works with communities across the country on development issues.
The town’s revitalization committee arranged for the ULI to send a panel to Mount Desert to assess needs, challenges and opportunities in such areas as new business development, year-round employment and affordable housing. The town will pick up $5,000 of the cost of the panel’s work, and the Summer Residents Association (SRA) has agreed to cover any additional expenses.
Dick Broom never seems to walk anywhere without a faithful dog at his side. His beat includes the towns of Mount Desert and Trenton, Mount Desert Island High School and the regional school system board and superintendent's office. He and his wife live in Bar Harbor.
