BAR HARBOR — The men and women who sacrificed their lives for American freedom will be honored with wreath ceremonies, parades and solemn remembrances at locations across the area this Memorial Day, Monday, May 28.
In Bar Harbor, at 10 a.m., a bagpiper is slated to lead the fire department color guard, Boy Scouts and veterans on a short procession from Newport Drive to the town pier. There, they join members of the American Legion for a ceremony including guest speakers Rep. Elsie Flemings, Sen. Brian Langley and Cmd. Robert Cameron USN Ret.
For the first time, the Legion will honor area Civil War veterans. A list of local men who came back from the Civil War and became members of the Grand Army of the Republic recently was unearthed during housecleaning at the Legion post, commander Jeana Durost said.
Descendants of the Civil War veterans are invited to attend the ceremony, Ms. Durost said. A full list of the names to be read can be reviewed at www.fenceviewer.com.
During the ceremony, the crew of a U.S. Coast Guard ship will throw a wreath overboard in remembrance of all who have served and died. Afterward, music will be provided by the Gospel Gents. There will be coffee and doughnuts and tours of the patrol boat. The event is sponsored by the Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce, Queen Anne’s Flowers and Hannaford.
Southwest Harbor
A wreath-laying ceremony is slated for Norwood Square, at the corner of Main Street and Seal Cove Road, at 9 a.m. followed by a parade from there to the Veterans Village Green Park downtown.
At the park, a more extensive ceremony and wreath-laying is planned. The keynote speaker will be Col. Mike Matthews, intelligence officer at the Maine Air National Guard in Bangor.
