SOUTHWEST HARBOR — Competitive bicyclists will speed through a 30-mile course on the western side of Mount Desert Island on Sunday, May 27 for the annual Westside Rides. The races are sponsored by the Harbor House Community Service Center.
This year the “pro ride” is a timed race along the 30-mile route, and the “go the distance ride” is a non-timed version of the same 30-mile course.
“We’re expecting over 100 riders between the pro-ride and the ‘go the distance’ ride,” said Diana Novella of Harbor House.
Harbor House also is sponsoring a family ride that will run from Harbor House to the Seawall picnic area. “It has a great view and is a nice place to stop,” said Novella.
Entrants into the “pro-ride” and “go the distance” ride are eligible to receive a bevy of prizes donated by Cadillac Mountain Sports.
This year’s 30-mile competitive race will begin with a rolling start on Main Street toward Manset. The finish line will be on Maine Street in front of Harbor House and awards will follow the finish at Harbor House. Registration is from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with a start time of 1 p.m. The cost for adult riders (19 and older) is $30; $20 for children. The minimum age to qualify for the race is 12.
