ELLSWORTH — With a week to go in the regular baseball season, the Ellsworth Eagles were in danger of falling out of Eastern Maine Class B playoff contention when they took the field on Tuesday.
But with a 10-1 win over the Bucksport Golden Bucks, the Eagles improved to 6-8 and vaulted from 13th to seventh in the Class B standings with just two games now left on their schedule.
The Sumner Tigers are facing a similar situation in Class C — except that they are presently on the outside looking in.
With four games remaining on their schedule, the 3-9 Tigers are one spot out of playoff contention in 12th place and trail number 11 Madawaska by nearly five points.
For four other Hancock County teams, post-season playoff appearances are pretty much assured.
In Class B, the 8-5 Mount Desert Island Trojans are ranked sixth; in Class C, the 9-4 Golden Bucks are fourth and the 7-5 George Stevens Academy Eagles are sixth; and in Class D, the 8-4 Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners are fifth.
