Top-ranked Ellsworth Boys Remain Undefeated

Written by  Hugh Bowden Wednesday, May 23, 2012 at 3:45 pm

ELLSWORTH — With the regular tennis season all but over, the Ellsworth Eagle boys and the George Stevens Academy Eagle boys top their respective Eastern Maine standings.

Final rankings are yet to be published by the Maine Principals’ Association, but it appears six of Hancock County’s eight teams will be moving on to post-season play.

Ellsworth, with a perfect 11-0 record and only a match with Hermon remaining, is nearly 50 Heal points in front of the number two Mount Desert Island Trojans (7-5) in the Class B boys’ ranks.

Among Class B girls’ teams, undefeated Waterville leads the way while the 9-2 Ellsworth Eagles are fourth and the 10-2 MDI Trojans are fifth.

Among Class C boys, the 11-1 GSA Eagles hold a tight grasp on first place with the 7-5 Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners ranked eighth.

The 11-0 Van Buren Crusaders have climbed to the top of the Class C girls’ standings with Mattanawcook Academy second and the 10-2 GSA Eagles less than two points back in third.

The 2-10 DI-Stonington girls appear to have missed the 14th — and last — qualifying spot by just three-tenths of a point, and both Sumner Tiger teams are out of contention.

Preliminary playoffs are set to get under way on Tuesday.

In Class B, teams ranked sixth through 11th will play in the first round with the top five teams advancing directly to the quarterfinals.

For Class C boys, the top three teams will get a first round bye, with the remaining 10 teams facing preliminary playoffs.

For Class C girls, the top two seeds will get a bye with teams 3-14 facing preliminary playoffs.
