Eagles Offense Comes Alive in Defeat of Bucks

Written by  Hugh Bowden Wednesday, May 23, 2012 at 2:46 pm

ELLSWORTH — Righthanders Kyle Haslam and Codey Pettengill combined on a no-hitter as the Ellsworth Eagles had their best offensive game of the year in a 10-1 win over the Bucksport Golden Bucks Tuesday.

The Eagles scored all the runs they needed in the second inning against Bucksport righthander Mike Cummings.

With Ellsworth trailing 1-0, Brandon Braley singled and Dustin Smelley and Sid St. Peter both walked to load the bases.

One out later, Conor Maguire drilled a two run single, Del Beckwith walked, Jacob Maguire drove in a third run with a sacrifice fly and Haslam followed with a two-run single.

The Golden Bucks threatened in the top of the third as Haslam struggled with his control, loading the bases on walks before getting a force-out at second to end the inning.

The Eagles added a run in the bottom of the inning when Smelley walked, stole second, went to third on an infield single by St. Peter and scored as St. Peter was thrown out trying to steal second.

With lefthander Asher Bowden on in relief of Cummings, the Eagles pushed across another run in the bottom of the fifth.

Riley DeWitt reached on an error, went to second and third on wild pitches and scored on a throwing error.

The Eagles capped their scoring in the bottom of the sixth.

St. Peter singled and Conor Maguire walked but was forced at second with St. Peter moving to third on a pop single by Beckwith.

St. Peter then scored on a wild pitch with Beckwith going to third, and Jacob Maguire followed with a run-scoring single.

Haslam then reached base on yet another Bucksport error, with Maguire scoring the final run of the game.
