MDI Soccer Coach Rosenfeld Retires

Written by

John RosenfeldBAR HARBOR — John Rosenfeld, founder of the Mount Desert Island High School boys’ soccer program, announced his retirement this week after 35 years as varsity head coach.

“It was a very difficult decision to make,” said Rosenfeld, who retired last year from teaching math at MDIHS and recently made the decision to leave coaching based on changes in his schedule and new time constraints.

“The idea of not being head coach hasn’t hit me yet. I don’t think it will really register until next September when practice starts,” he said. “I’ll probably have a bit of empty nest syndrome.”

Rosenfeld, who played Division I soccer for the University of Maine from 1969 to 1972, got his start with the Trojans after he approached then athletic director, Bernard Parady with an idea to start a soccer club.

“It was really my own love for the game of soccer that led me here” he said. In his time here, he said, he “enjoyed every minute of it.”
